The Tax Institute raises some issues about the Treasury Discussion Paper, Review of Pensions in Small Superannuation Funds released on 21 January 2005. The Institute supports a revision of certain aspects of the defined benefit pension rules. However, it strongly recommends that, due to the high level of current uncertainty in this area, the transitional relief period be extended until 30 June 2006 to allow proper consideration and analysis of the issues and to decide on the best long-term strategic solution.
